WEEK 1- Nathalie Djurberg's 'Claymations'.

Nathalie Djurberg's 'Claymations'.

Swedish artist Nathalie Djurberg's intricately constructed claymation films are both terrifyingly disturbing and artlessly sweet.

The new works created for the Venice Biennale explore a surrealistic Garden of Eden in which all that is natural goes awry.

She exposes the innate fear of what is not understood and confronts viewers with the complexity of emotions.

Nathalie Djurberg was awarded the silver lion for a promising young artist at the Venice
Art Biennale 09.

1. What do you understand by the word 'claymation'?

The "Claymation" is a term that comes from clay animation . It is refer to any animation using plasticine or similar substance. So that object can be moved many times during filming . The used technique include of exposing film frame moving the clay slightly by the hand , then another frame and object is moved slightly . This process is operated repeatly tell the animator has created a desired amount of film.

2. What is meant by the term 'surrealistic Garden of Eden'? and 'all that is natural goes awry'?

The term 'surrealistic Garden of Eden' is combined bo 'surrealistic' and 'Garden of Eden'. The 'Surrealistic' has feature of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions. 'Garden of Eden' is the place where "Adam" and his wife :Eve: lived. It creates location for human love and sexually. In my opinion, Nathalie Djurberg created 'surrealistic Garden of Eden' to express and show the beautiful envrionment , like the Garden of Eden, in a surrealistic style. She twisted the normal ideas of peaceful of plant .  When it comes to 'all that is natural goes awry', which refers to artist show different feeling and aspects to describe an object in actual life. Nathalie Djurberg use clay to creat plants in irregular way.

3. What are the 'complexity of emotions' that Djurberg confronts us with?

Nathalie Djurberg tends to show the diversity of emotions in her work to audience, including violence, sexuality, cruelty, fear, death and brutality. For example, one of her work is about  flower, the flower is filled with blood, and the blood even spilling on the floor.

4. How does Djurberg play with the ideas of children's stories, and innocence in some of her work?

She twisted the idea and showed children' aspect of cruel, instead of innocence. Also, in her short action animation dramas, she described " fairy tales gone mad", forces of good and evil, dark and light. Her characters oftern exist in moral tension with each other.

5. There is a current fascination by some designers with turning the innocent and sweet into something disturbing. Why do you think this has come about?

These designers try to show the different styles to audience, such as awkward and violent, rather than innocent and sweet aspects. Ath the first glance, these works seem disturbing, however, these works are more likely to attract audience and make them have a deep thinking later.

6. In your opinion, why do you think Djurberg's work is so interesting that it was chosen for the Venice Biennale?

Personally, I think Djurberg's work is interesting because she tend to show the evil and creepy aspects in her works, instead of innocent and sweet. Her work was chosen for the Venice Biennale may becasue of her extraordinary style, which make audience feel disturbing at the first glance, but make them think deeply later.

7. Add some of your own personal comments on her work.

To be honest, I am not a big fun of her works, since I can not totally accept her disturbing style and the disgusting works. However, her unique style can inform me to think and design my work from different aspects, focus on expressing my own ideas in different way, rather than just follow their ideas and styles.
